Your heart works tirelessly every single day—beating about 100,000 times and pumping blood to every cell in your body. Taking care of it doesn’t have to be complicated. With a few mindful habits, you can reduce your risk of heart disease and keep your heart strong for years to come.

Why Heart Health Matters

Heart disease remains one of the leading causes of death worldwide, but the good news is that much of it is preventable. High blood pressure, high cholesterol, smoking, diabetes, and a lack of physical activity are major contributors—but each of these can be managed with everyday choices.

Eat with Your Heart in Mind

A healthy diet is one of the best gifts you can give your heart. Focus on whole, nutrient-rich foods:

Choose fruits and vegetables in a variety of colors.

Pick whole grains like oats, brown rice, and quinoa.

Reach for lean proteins such as fish, poultry, beans, or nuts.

Use olive or avocado oil instead of butter or shortening.

Limit salt, sugar, and processed foods.

Even small changes—like swapping a sugary drink for water or adding one more serving of vegetables—make a difference over time.

Move More, Sit Less

The heart loves movement. Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate activity most days of the week. Walking, dancing, swimming, gardening—anything that gets your heart rate up counts. If you’re new to exercise, start small and build up gradually.

Manage Stress and Sleep

Emotional health affects your heart too. Chronic stress can raise blood pressure and impact your sleep. Try deep breathing, meditation, journaling, or spending time in nature. Getting seven to eight hours of quality sleep each night helps your body repair and keeps your heart rhythm steady.

Know Your Numbers

Regular checkups are vital. Know your blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar levels. These numbers tell an important story about your heart. Early detection allows for better prevention and management.

A Heart-Healthy Future

Protecting your heart is a lifelong journey, not a short-term goal. Every healthy choice adds up—one meal, one walk, one good night’s sleep at a time. Talk to your healthcare provider about your personal risk factors and take steps today to keep your heart beating strong tomorrow.

Many people admit that winter isn’t their favorite season.

Let’s agree that less time outside, less movement, colder temperatures and earlier sundown can affect both our physical and mental health.

When it’s cold(er) outside, we typically spend less time in the great outdoors and typically, there is a heightened chance for illness.

How can you prevent the latter?

To stay healthy in winter, your Consensus Health physician is here to guide you with suggestions for conquering those winter blues many of us face.

Our physicians will encourage you to eat a healthy, nutritious diet; stay physically active (today, there are myriad indoor fitness options); ensure you get enough sleep; and, that you stay hydrated – even in the winter. Be sure to follow your physicians’ guidance and if recommended, get a flu shot to protect yourself. Lastly, take precautions against both germs and the cold weather.

Let’s break down best ways for adhering to our physicians’ recommendations:

Eat well

Focus on eating a balanced diet rich in fiber, fruits, vegetables and whole grains, which essentially strengthens and supports your immune system.

Stay active

Exercise regularly to boost your immune system and bolster your mood. If you can’t exercise outdoors, try indoor workouts such as strength training, yoga, Pilates and/or cycling classes. The options are too numerous to count these days; surely there is something for everyone.

Catch those ZZZs

Aim to get about 7-9 hours of quality sleep per night, with 8 being the optimal amount. Lack of sleep can weaken your immune system.

Stay hydrated

Even in the cold months, staying hydrated must remain a priority. Drink plenty of water, even if you don’t feel as thirsty in the colder weather, as dehydration can result in fatigue and headaches.

Protect yourself with a flu shot

A flu shot is a safe, effective way to protect yourself from influenza. Ask your doctor about when to get it and if it is suitable for you, based on your health profile.

Elevate emphasis on hygiene and germ prevention

Wash your hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Try to avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth to prevent germs from entering your body. Keep surfaces clean by disinfecting them frequently with sanitizer. Cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze to prevent germs from spreading.

Reduce stress

No matter the season, reducing stress remains paramount to good health. While holidays can elevate stress, try to stay happy and joyful by practicing these aforementioned good habits. Make time for celebrations, family and friends but be sure to find pockets of relaxation that resonate with you and your lifestyle.

Layer up

Layering up in the winter provides us a greater sense of protection against and safety during the cold months.

While we tend to stay indoors more, don’t fear the outdoors. It can be refreshing and healthy if you properly prepare by wearing layers of clothing to stay warm and protected from the elements.

There are many winter sports people enjoy such as skiing, snowboarding, cross country skiing and snow showing. All these are wonderful options and allow you to stay active. Be sure to dress accordingly when participating in these outdoor activities. Pay close attention to severe weather warnings so you can take precautions against frostbite and hypothermia while outdoors.

Make winter your wonderland by simply being prepared for it, and embrace the chill … because you might that chillin’ during the winter month brings you the warmth, comfort and solace you need to stay healthy.

The holiday season is upon us.

With all the joy, excitement and happiness of the holidays also comes stress, overscheduling, not-such-perfect eating habits, less time for exercise and even possibly, higher alcohol consumption — all contributors to impacting our health and wellness.

Here are some tips to help ensure you and your loved ones stay health during the holiday season:

Hydrate

Yes, hydration is often talked about as a vital component to health but during winter, it is perhaps even more important. Drinking at least eight cups per day with and between meals keep you hydrated, healthy and armed to fend off infections

Reduce stress

Try to focus on holiday traditions and emphasize good cheer. The holidays do create extra pressures for many. Try to find a way to stay focused and organized and make time for what matters most to you and yours during this special time of year

Get rest

Don’t neglect your sleep and try to stick to your daily regimen. Many become overscheduled with holiday celebrations and parties. Limit caffeine and alcohol and large late-night meals to ensure the best ZZZZ’s possible

Dress accordingly

In our parts here in the Northeast, it can be extraordinary cold over the holidays. Wearing layers, hats and mittens better protects you from inclement weather and helps support health and wellness

Limit time outside in the cold

It’s best to avoid too much time outside for fear of frostbite and even hypothermia. Also, pay close attention to weather hazards, such as snow storms to keep you and your family safe

Exercise

This time of year, fitness and exercise are more important than ever. Dull winter months filled with dim and dark skies and cold temperatures can easily dampen enthusiasm for exercise. Don’t let that stop you. Find indoor options to keep your fitness regimen and momentum going

Ward off those germs

It’s a simple solution … wash your hands! This is among the best ways to avoid getting sick and spreading common winter illnesses, such as colds. Germs accumulate through nearly everything you do or touch, so frequent hand-washing can make all the difference in the world. Wash hands for at least 20 seconds, scrubbing all surfaces and rinsing well. Also, get flu and COVID-19 vaccines to avoid being sick during the coldest time of year – which oftentimes, is in fact the holiday season

All of us at Consensus Health wish you a happy and HEALTHY holiday season. We are here to help in the event you or a family member does get sick. You know where to find us – this season and every season.

Stay well.

Just because you feel healthy doesn’t mean you shouldn’t visit the doctor.

Wellness check-ups — also known as annual physicals or well visits — are vital to one’s health and well-being. They can help identify health issues early on or even prevent them, resulting in better treatment protocols and improved patient outcomes. Sometimes, preventative measures addressed during wellness check-ups can even help prolong life.

Checking off wellness check-ups can be a good check-in on your health as they can:

Help identify health issues before they possibly morph into something serious

Provide tips on important preventative measures for pinpointing potential conditions

Afford patients the chance to address concerns, lifestyle changes and even stressors — all in an effort to improve overall health

Aid in monitoring and managing chronic conditions for those patients that fall into this category

Prevent disease; after all prevention is far more cost-effective than treatments … in every way

What you can expect at your annual wellness check-up:

Discussion about your medical, surgical and social histories and those of your close family members

Review of any current health concerns or problems

Checking of all your vital signs as they can be indicators for possible conditions, such as:

Blood pressure

Heart rate

Height

Weight

Body mass index (BMI)

Recap of any current medications

Assessment of health risks to ascertain potential threat of certain diseases

Undergo diagnostics, such as blood tests, cholesterol checks, cancer screenings and immunizations

Checking those tasks off the list once per year has the potential to sharpen your wellness practices, improve overall health, prevent diseases and leave you with peace of mind.

Perhaps most importantly, a wellness visit provides one-one-one private time with your provider where you can speak openly and confidentially about your concerns, needs or care.

It is always better to be safe than sorry — that’s particularly relevant when it comes to wellness check-ups.

The frequency of one’s own personal check-ups depends on many factors, including your specific doctor’s recommendation, age, health, family history and lifestyle choices. Your physician can guide you on expectations for your wellness visits as well as timing and wellness steps to take to ensure your own good health.

When it comes to wellness visits, the old saying … ”An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” … is worth remembering.

Check off scheduling your check-up and book your visit now
